Money Saving Expert and regular on ITV’s This Morning, Martin Lewis took to Twitter yesterday to express his ordeal at being mugged by men on a moped.

The guru, who often helps members of the public save thousands of pounds a year with his handy tips and tricks, fell foul of the theft as he was walking down Oxford Street in Westminster, London at around 5pm.

Writing on social media site, Facebook, the Lewis said: “I’m somewhat shell shocked.

“About 40 minutes ago two men on a moped just rode up on the pavement and snatched my mobile out of my hands. The speed and accuracy was frightening.”

He also tweeted that he was shocked and urged his 470,000 followers to “beware”.

The theft is a mirror of previous attacks on innocent members of the public, who were targeted back in May by a motorbike gang brandishing hammers and metal rods around the capital.

Chief Superintendent Peter Ayling of Westminster borough said at the time: “We are working hard to keep the public safe and make the streets hostile territory for criminals who use mopeds, motorbikes and bicycles to snatch valuables from members of the public.

“We have been made aware of this serious incident and it is a top priority to identify and arrest these reckless offenders who have little regard for their own safety, or the safety of others.

“A vast majority of offences involving moped enabled snatch are opportunistic and do not involve violence or showing of weapons.

“It is important that the public are aware of their surroundings at all times and protect their personal property, as this crime happens in an instant. I would urge people to consider using a hands-free device to make a call and do not text or use apps by the roadside, where they are most vulnerable to snatch-theft.”
